🚨ICYMI🚨 D’ORC #1 - IMAGE COMICS BREAKOUT - Countdown Comics

Brett Bean’s D’orc is already shaping up to be one of those books people kick themselves for sleeping on....

The debut issue from Image Comics sold out at the distributor level on release day, which is wild for a brand-new creator-owned title. Shops are already looking at second prints, and first-print copies are starting to creep up on the secondary market. If your LCS still has any sitting on the shelf, this is the time to grab one, not “wait and see” and then end up paying way over cover later.

What makes D’orc click isn’t just the heat around it, the concept absolutely delivers. The story follows a half-dwarf, half-orc orphan stuck in the middle of a never-ending fantasy war, armed with a loud-mouthed enchanted shield and a destiny nobody actually wants: he’s prophesied to end the world. So of course, once people find out, everyone either wants to control him, weaponize him, or get rid of him entirely. It’s big fantasy stakes, but filtered through this misfit, doesn’t-belong-anywhere main character.

Tone-wise, it’s a really fun mix: part ridiculous, part brutal, and surprisingly heartfelt. You get over-the-top fantasy chaos, weird creatures, and sharp comedy, but there’s also this undercurrent of “what if you really were the walking disaster everyone blamed for everything?” It feels perfect for readers who like stuff in the vein of I Hate Fairyland, darkly funny D&D campaigns, or fantasy that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The creative team is a big part of why it works. Brett Bean is doing both writing and art, and his style has that animated, expressive energy that sells the jokes and the action in equal measure. Jean-François Beaulieu’s colors make the world pop! Lots of bold, high-fantasy palette choices that keep even the more violent moments fun to look at. Nate Piekos’ lettering gives the shield and supporting cast a ton of personality; you can “hear” the voices in your head as you read.

On the collectible side, Image launched D’orc with a pretty stacked cover lineup:

  • Cover A by Brett Bean

  • Cover B by Jorge Corona

  • Cover C by Jason Howard

  • Cover D (1:25) by Ryan Ottley

  • Cover E (1:50) by Ryan Stegman

  • Cover F Blank Sketch Variant

Between the buzz and that roster of cover artists, it’s no surprise first prints and ratios are getting extra attention already.

If you’re even mildly curious, do yourself a favor and get it on your pull list now. Hunt down a first print if you can, lock in a second print if you can’t, and keep an eye out for issue #2 coming out March 11th (You can pre-order it on my site). The early previews make it look like things are only going to get louder, bloodier, and funnier from here.
